Pain and Anger

"Rrrrrrrrng......Rrrrrrrng" David's phone rang out in the middle of the night. Jessica's name flashed on the screen. It was 2'o clock. Why the fuck was his ex calling him at this hour? He had no idea. He picked up the mobile.
"Hey!"
"Hey," the voice of the girl who broke his heart floated from the other side.
"What happened?" He asked. "Nothing, just felt like talking to you," she replied.
"Fuck off, Jess. You think you can just call me up for no reason and wake me up at 2 in the night?"
"It's good to hear your voice too," She always spoke like that. It reminded David of the good ol' days. He smiled. He still remembers the day they kissed for the first time, under the clear sky. They were watching the stars. He reached in and when their lips met, it felt like bliss. It has been five years now. It has been two years since they broke up.
"Let me sleep," said David.
"Hey, don't hang up, okay? I need you for a moment," she pleaded.
"Oh! So you need me now? After all these years. You don't call me for the past two years. You didn't even leave a message, while I ripped my heart out trying to forget about you- trying to erase all the memories of you and me and now you call me in the middle of the night, saying you need me. You didn't need me then, did you? I have moved on okay, Jess? I don't want this anymore. We can't go back to what we used to be. I am not your toy, okay? So stop fucking bugging me now." David's voice broke.
He hasn't moved on. There is not a single day when he does not wake up in the morning, wishing that what happened didn't happen. In his heart he still loved her. He still cared. But now he was angry. He was frustrated. Most of all, he was just scared that if he did go back, he would just end up getting hurt again. "So not this time. Not again." he thought.
He heard a sob on the other end of the line. He knew he had been harsh. It might have been too harsh actually. But he needed to let some steam out. He had been holding that in for a long time now.
"Fuck, sorry Jess. But you know- that's the truth. This isn't fair for me, all right? This ain't fair at all."
Shit, now even he was crying.

They were supposed to meet at the old bookstore that day. It was where they always met. David even bought her favourite ice-cream. They were supposed to celebrate the anniversary of the first day that they had met. David waited with his surprise. Jessica came in through the door, walked over to where David was sitting. David had noticed the tears in her eyes as she had walked in. "What's wrong?" he had asked. "It's not working out Dave. I'm sorry" And that was that. David felt his world crashing down."Not today," he thought "not today."

"I am sorry, Jess. I really am. I will have to hang up now, okay? I need to get some sleep. You need to get some sleep too....."
"Come on Dave. I messed up. It won't happen again. Please stay Dave. Please stay" she cut off David.
"It would happen again. It always does. Hey, I need to go, all right? Bye" David hung up.
"Dave.....Dave? Shit." On the other end of the line, there was only silence.

He was her last hope. He was the only person who could've stopped her from doing what she did next. He was the one that could have saved her.

She was failing college. Her parents were always fighting. She just needed someone she could talk to. She needed someone to listen to her that night. And that someone was David.

All her sorrows, worries, fears piled up into a fucking great ball of misery. It was too much. At least she felt it to be so. She felt so weak. She felt so alone.

She embraced the silence. She let herself go. The cold wind nipped against her face. But it was a good kind of pain. It was better than she had ever felt for the past couple of years.

She was free.

David, too could'nt sleep well that night. He stayed awake for hours before drifting into a troubled dream.

He woke up much later than usual. He checked the news on his mobile. He always did that.
And there it was, at the top of the feed.
BREAKING NEWS: JESSICA GARNER, 22, GIRL DEALING WITH DEPRESSION, DIES AFTER JUMPING FROM BALCONY.
Beneath the headlines was a photo of her. She had a red gown on. She looked so beautiful when she put on that gown. It was David's favourite. In fact, it was David who had clicked the photo, on the night of their high school graduation.
